Lure of the Lakes There's something deeply therapeutic about living close to water. Jazz Kuschke packed his fly rod and found a place among the golf estates and holiday palaces of the Garden Route's lakes area, where you can still find fish-promising water and good old-fashioned value for money in a forested garden. The lodge jetties are a good place to start fishing; there are plenty of weeds, reeds and fishy-looking hide-outs for bass to take shelter under. There's also ample casting room - pretty useful if you're a fly-fisher. And flies work . . .. Throwing a woolly bugger, muddler minnow or brightly coloured popper (three recommended flies) as close to the likely structures as possible and retrieving them erratically, usually produces a strike (that rod-twitching moment when the fish hits the fly). If you fancy yourself a bit of a gymnast - able to fly-cast while balancing on a rowing boat - then you're bound to hook into some decent-sized fish further out in the lake. Fly-fishing isn't the only way to land the big-uns, and the largest usually fall for artificial lures fished off boats (usually rowed, but electric trolling motors are allowed on the dam). Home to these much sought, not-quite indigenous largemouth bass is the fresh-water haven of Groenvlei.
The only body of water in the Garden Route lakes system which isn't connected to the sea, this five-kilometre long, one-kilometre wide refuge is also home to an array of birds (half-collared kingfishers, fish eagles and black-headed orioles are some of the notables). While you're likely to find fishing tackle at most tents, caravans and chalets, trophy bass is only one of the reasons why people visit Lake Pleasant Resort and Chalets at the vlei. Where to stay at Lake Pleasant The Lake Pleasant Chalets and Lodges, one kilometer outside Sedgefield in the direction of Knysna, is a great place to stay when you're holidaying along the Garden Route. It's set away from the December madness of over-crowded streets lined with coffee shops, restaurants and B&B signs, and the cottages and camp sites snuggle in well-established, quiet gardens. Lake Pleasant is a spread-out affair, with five timber cottages (three bedrooms and two bathrooms each) on a milk wood-forested hill, and eight semi-detached, four-sleeper face-brick garden lodges among the trees at dam level. All the chalets are fully equipped for self-catering - complete with everything from cutlery to braai grids. It's also a popular camping and caravanning spot. There are about 60 sites, laid out in the shade of bird-filled trees and on lawns which invite games of garden cricket, long picnics or just lazing on your back. If bird-watching or fishing is too much outdoor activity, there's also a squash court, indoor fitness centre and games room to keep you occupied. In an area that's booming with new developments and estates, Groenvlei and the comfortable, lush resort on its banks is a pleasant surprise. If the fish aren't biting
The emphasis at Lake Pleasant is on kicking back and enjoying what's left of the Garden Route. If not fishing, the ways to do this are hiking (various day trails in the area); sun soaking at Platbank Beach (just three kilometers from the lodge) or mountain biking (Outeniqua Biking Trails phone 044-532-7644). Another popular way to see the lakes region is from the window of the famous Outeniqua Choo-Tjoe. The steam train clickety-clacks for 67 kilometres between Knysna and George, through areas removed from the usual N2 road views. Book 24 hours before to departure (phone 044-801-8288). Peridot's Restaurant Peridot's restaurant in the resort grounds is the place for tasty breakfasts, lunches, dinners, teas, take-aways and all other nibbles in between. Owner/chef Billy Ausker describes his menu as a blend of European and African dishes. After a long day's fishing, hiking or doing nothing, definitions cease to matter, especially when the portions are South African-sized - so big they're guaranteed to have you taking the left-overs home for later on or for the next day's snack. Meals can be served on the veranda. The 80-seater restaurant is open every day during summer and peak seasons, and closed on Tuesdays during the rest of the year.
